MIchael BatesPAOC welcomes new postdoc Michael Bates who joins the Marshall Group from the University of New South Wales were he has just finished his PhD at the Climate Change Research Centre there. In his thesis "A dynamic, embedded Lagrangian model for ocean climate models", he worked with Matt England (UNSW) and Stephen Griffies (GFDL) to formulate a method to embed a Lagrangian model within an Eulerian (in the horizontal) ocean model to better represent physical processes.  The method was applied in MOM to gravity driven downslope flows in order to give them a more physical representation, which will hopefully improve the representation of things like the overturning circulation.

Although originally from Austrailia, Michael spent a lot of time in Papua New Guinea as a child as well as working there for three years between finishing his undergrad degree and starting postgraduate work.

When he's not busy playing with ocean models he enjoys underwater hockey. He's also a keen bushwalker, scuba diver and enjoys a "bit of cycling".

You can find Michael in 54-1517 (with Dave Wang and Aaron Donohue). His email is m_bates@mit.edu.
