SLS - Larry Pratt (WHOI) - The mysteries of eel migration from the Sargasso Sea to the North American coast
Date Time Location
December 3rd, 2014 12:10pm-1:00pm 54-915
It is a mystery how larvae of the American Eel, which are born in the Sargasso Sea and have very limited movement capability, are able to reach the east coast of the N. America in less than one year (which they must do to survive). They must cross the Gulf Stream and deal with other adverse currents and barriers such as the Labrador Current, the shelf break and the Shelf Break Jet. Using the FLAME model, we explore some strategies that allow limited swimming and navigation strategies in an attempt determine the capabilities that larvae depend on to succeed. We also explore the role of eddies in their success.
