Links between ocean physics and biogeochemistry: present and future

Abstract: The ocean's response to anthropogenic perturbations and its capacity to store heat and carbon are inextricably intertwined with its circulation. I will present how atmospheric and oceanic biogeochemical observations such as carbon and oxygen can provide new constraints on ocean circulation, particularly the meridional heat transport. Next, I will discuss how shortcomings in simulating present day ocean circulation in climate models impact our ability to predict future biogeochemical changes such as acidification and deoxygenation, key factors for climate feedbacks and ecosystems responses.
