A new framework to study energy in the ocean

Abstract:

A new framework to diagnose the energy budget of the ocean is proposed. It relies on the concept of dynamic potential energy, defined as the horizontal anomaly of potential energy. Based on this new framework, the energetics of ocean circulation will be described for a simple double-gyre model, forced by wind or thermal relaxation, or both.
