Delving into the Past to Provide Insights into Modern Climate and Oceanography

Answers to many significant questions in the climate and oceanographic sciences are elusive, in part because the instrumental temperature record is short and modern oceanographic observations are sparse. Geologic records offer an avenue to extend the time spanned by “observations” and over a greater range of climate states, provided we have reliable proxies for past ocean conditions. On each field excursion, therefore, we strive to collect appropriate material for proxy calibrations as well as for detailed reconstructions. I will discuss questions that have motivated my recent fieldwork in the tropics, the fieldwork itself, preliminary outcomes, and future directions.
