Christophe Guinet,
CNRS, presents "Observing the ocean with the aid of marine mammals."
In recent years considerable progresses have been achieved to study the foraging behaviour of top marine predators through the use of a wide range of miniaturized instruments attached on the animals. While some sensors allow to monitor feeding events, others are used to measure oceanographic parameters such as temperature, salinity, fluorescence, and dissolved oxygen. The combination of these different measurements obtained simultaneously along the trajectory of several elephant seals are able to provide an unprecedentedly detailed picture of how marine mammals use their environment to optimize their feeding efficiency.
