Paleo ice volume changes on a dynamically evolving Earth

Past changes in global ice volume are a sensitive indicator of climate variability. Reconstructions of these ice volume changes are commonly based on geological records of local sea level change after these records have been corrected for ice age effects, or on ice sheet models driven by appropriate climate forcings. In my talk I will argue, using two case studies, that major advances in both approaches - and in our knowledge of ancient ice volumes - require a more sophisticated treatment of mantle structure and evolution.
