TEMPO: The future of space-based air pollution observations
The Tropospheric Emissions: Monitoring of Pollution (TEMPO) geostationary satellite instrument to be launched in 2018 represents a transformative development for observing air pollution from space. TEMPO will provide hourly data covering the North American continent, allowing monitoring of the progression of pollution events and the diurnal evolution of sources and chemistry. I will present an overview of the mission, simulations of policy-relevant and science applications of TEMPO measurements, and current efforts to enable TEMPO observations of ozone air quality by combining measurements in the ultraviolet and visible spectral regions.
