Bottom Boundary Layer Turbulence and the Ocean Overturning Circulation
Date Time Location
December 6th, 2018 9:00am-9:00pm MIT

Over the last lustrum much progress has been made in understanding the role of bottom boundary layers on the ocean overturning circulation. We think it would be fun to gather for one day to discuss the most exciting ongoing research and brainstorm about future directions. The timing could not be better because a major observational campaign has just been funded to sample the bottom boundary layer turbulence and ensuing water mass conversions in the Rockall Trough.

Getting input from the theoretical community before instruments go in the water may prove crucial to a successful experiment. We would like to have presentations on (1) the dynamics of bottom boundary layer turbulence, (2) its impact on the bottom ocean circulation, and (3) its connection to global water mass transformations and circulation.

We do not have support available for the meeting, but we hope you will be able to attend an informal meeting at MIT on Dec. 6 on “Bottom Boundary Layer Turbulence and the Ocean Overturning Circulation”. Please feel free to contact people who you think would be good to have at the meeting. We only ask that you all register though this link here so that we have some idea of the room size we will need to accommodate everybody. Suggestions about possible accommodations will follow soon.

We look forward to seeing you all bottom boundary layer fans!
