I am interested in developing new analytical methods to investigate the molecular scale interactions between metals and microbes in the environment. My graduate research is focused on the characterization of organic compounds that bind trace metals in seawater (particularly Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn). These ligands are ubiquitous throughout the ocean and their composition has important consequences for metal solubility, toxicity, and bioavailability. Little is known, however, about their chemical composition or sources. Using hyphenated liquid chromatography mass spectrometry methods, I have developed an analytical pipeline for the structural characterization of novel ligands from seawater and marine cultures.

Bio and Interests

I am interested in developing new analytical methods to investigate the molecular scale interactions between metals and microbes in the environment. My graduate research is focused on the characterization of organic compounds that bind trace metals in seawater (particularly Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn). These ligands are ubiquitous throughout the ocean and their composition has important consequences for metal solubility, toxicity, and bioavailability. Little is known, however, about their chemical composition or sources. Using hyphenated liquid chromatography mass spectrometry methods, I have developed an analytical pipeline for the structural characterization of novel ligands from seawater and marine cultures.
