Title: "Diapycnal mixing in the Atlantic Ocean: role in the overturning circulation and tracer distribution"
Abstract: This talk will discuss the role that internal wave-driven diapycnal mixing plays in (i) the closure of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, and (ii) in regulating the distribution of tracers, such as heat, carbon or oxygen, carried by the southward flowing dense waters of North Atlantic origin. From observationally-based mixing estimates and numerical simulations, it will be shown that mixing can potentially move tracers between different southward flowing water masses, therefore changing where the tracers upwell in the Southern Ocean, with implications for their global redistribution and ventilation timescales.
