Sack Lunch Seminar (SLS)

SLS - Nick Woods (MIT/WHOI) - Physical controls on dense copepod aggregations in the southwestern Gulf of Maine
Date Time Location

Copepods, a type of zooplankton, are often found concentrated in dense aggregations in the southwestern Gulf of Maine, where they are an important food resource for fish and whales. In this talk, I'll investigate a hypothetical aggregation mechanism whereby copepod concentration can increase at the nose of a buoyant plume. Using observations and simple numerical models, I'll discuss how this simple mechanism applies to buoyant plumes and what effect different biological behaviors have on the resulting copepod distribution.
