Title:  Creating aCulture of Inclusion in the Atmospheric Science Community

Abstract: After decades ofsustained efforts, the geosciences community, including the atmospheric andoceanic sciences, represents the lowest diversity of all STEM fields. Studieshave attributed this to a lack of engagement and belonging, recruitment, and retentionof women, BIPOC (black, indigenous, and people of color), LGBTQ+, and peoplewith disabilities. Diversity alone is not THE goal, it is A goal. How can weestablish a diverse, inclusive, and supportive community – one in which wefocus on cultivating an environment where all members are welcomed, have asense of belonging, and can thrive professionally? This presentation willhighlight (1) the state of the geosciences in terms of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI); (2) lessons learned from my experience as anatmospheric scientist and “champion” of JEDI; and (3) strategies fordismantling systemic barriers and advancing a culture of inclusion within theatmospheric science community.
