The oceans moderate global warming by taking up and storing significant amounts of anthropogenic CO2, resulting in significant decreases in pH and changes in biogeochemistry. However, determining where and how much CO2 is going into the ocean is a difficult task. Using high quality high resolution measurements of the carbon system, the distribution of anthropogenic CO2 and acidification can be determined. Measurements over the last 20 years have identified significant decadal variability in the oceans as a carbon sink indicating that the marine carbon cycle is far from resolved.
