Website F.A.Qs

You can always email the editor at webeditor@paoc.mit.edu but here are a few of the more frequently asked questions we have received about the site:

questions_0.jpg (Full)
Q: Do I need to disguise my email address? A: No the site employs software which hides all email addresses from web-bots and spam-crawlers
Q: How do I add my name to a research group page so that I will appear in the "associated people" list? A: Log in and go to your personal page. Click on the word "edit" towards the upper right of the page. Scroll down about 1/2 way until you see a list headed "Research labs, Groups and Centers". Find and highlight all that apply. To highlight multiple items: on a PC select using your mouse while holding down the <ctrl> key. On a Mac do the same, but with the <command> button. Don't forget to <save> your changes!
Q: When I type "return" in the rich text editor I get a double line-space? A: Use <shift><enter> together to get a single carriage return.
Q: The error says the picture I am trying to include in my page is too small? A: Use the GIMP, Photoshop, paint, picasa or some other external program to modify your  picture's size. 200 x 200 pixels works well for the 2 image upload areas in a personal page. Alternatively try uploading a less formal snapshot - the system provides a handy "crop" feature to help you leave out that  annoying person standing next to you!
Q: The error says the picture I am trying to include is too big?

A: Big pictures, while beautful, take a long time to load and could slow the site down so we had to set a limit: The maximum file upload size is 2MB.

Q: I am trying to embed a video about my work in my Media Gallery but it isn't in a supported format/ doesn't seem to work. What can I do? A: Currently supported formats include: Google, Youtube and Vimeo. But don't forget you can embed a video in any format in your bio text. Whatever happens don't let technical problems stand in your way - get in touch for help.
Q: I want to put my model output on youtube but it doesn't support animated gifs. What can I do? A: Contact the editor to discuss converting your files to a different format if you aren't sure or don't want to spend a lot of time doing it yourself.
Q: How do I upload PDFs/ PPTs/ other unsupported file types to my Media Gallery?

A: Unfortunately the site doesn't yet allow for uploading of PDF or PPT files through the Media Gallery area of personal pages. If you would like to share such material, and we warmly encourage you to do this, please contact the editor directly to make arrangements to copy your file to PAOC's online document archive.

Q: How do I get myself to appear under a particular topic when I "sort by topic" on the People page? A: Log in and go to your personal page. Click on the word "edit" towards the upper right of the page. Scroll down almost to the bottom  until you see a list headed "Research Topics". Find and highlight all that apply. To highlight multiple items: on a PC select using your mouse while holding down the <ctrl> key. On a Mac do the same, but with the <command> button. Don't forget to <save> your changes! Returning to the People page and sorting by topic, your picture should now appear each page you have associated with.

To complement this website, PAOC has established a youtube channel (for shorter video projects), a Tech TV channel (in particular for longer material), a flickr repository (for stills and slideshows) and a Google account (paoc.calendar@gmail.com) for calender management. To make use of any of these facilities (or suggest others PAOC should subscribe to) contact webeditor@paoc.mit.edu.
